Sometimes late at night I catch myself thinking about the war.
I think about all the struggles I went through and all the friends that I had…
I think about all the times that we laughed…
And the times that we cried…
I think about all the battles we fought…
And all the blood that we bled…
I think about all the doors we kicked in…
And all the encounters we survived…
I think about that hot desert sun beating down on me…
And the dirt I can still taste in my mouth…
But more than all of that, I think about how I’m a warrior without a war…
How I went overseas to die for my country yet somehow I survived…
And thinking about all this makes me depressed…
Because when I live in these memories, I’m holding onto the past…
I’m holding onto a memory of a time in my life that was truly amazing but has long since passed.
And while we will always be a part of the brotherhood of warriors that unites us all, we can’t continue to live our lives in the past.
It’s only by moving forward that we will truly start to live.
Still though…you can’t take the war out of the warrior…
But WE CAN change the war…
Instead of living in past memories and daydreaming of just one more day in our past lives, start fighting the war to be a better version of you.
Or the war to be a better parent, spouse and friend…
Or the war to lose weight and get into the best shape of our lives…
Or the war to advance your career and become financially free…
Or even the war to finally love yourself…
And use all of the experiences, training and knowledge that you’ve gained during your time in the service, to make yourself successful…
Because when you dedicate yourself to letting go of the past and start fighting a new war something amazing happens…
You start making new friends…
You face new battles and overcome new challenges…
And you find purpose in your life while feeling like your old self again…
So if you're anything like me, a warrior without a war, then I challenge you to take all the skills you’ve acquired and dedicate yourself to fighting a new war…
A war that challenges you, and makes you a better person…
Then hit reply and tell me all about it…
Because just because you’re entering a new war, doesn’t mean you have to go through it alone.
